The Introduction
Here’s a phrase you’re about to hear a lot more of — if you haven’t already: the “Internet of Things.” Or “IoT”. Internet of Things (IoT) is when the Internet and networks expand to devices in places such as manufacturing floors, energy grids, healthcare facilities, and transportation.

Things, in the IoT, can refer to a wide variety of devices such as heart monitoring implants, biochip transponders on farm animals, automobiles with built-in sensors that have been specifically programmed to collect valuable data through sensors and transmit these data to data storage systems on premise or somewhere in the cloud using internet protocols hence the Internet of Things.

The Break Down
An Intelligent System is a system that enables a seamless flow, processing, and consumption of data across the Things and An Enterprise Infrastructure. An Intelligent System consist of:

  • The Infrastructure Platform: Consists of Management Tools and IT with Identity, Security and Application management. This Infrastructure Platform may be run on the customers’ on-premises datacenter or from the Cloud. In many cases it is a hybrid solution with some elements in the Cloud and some, if not most, on-premises.

  • End Point Devices: Are devices that run specialized software (Windows Embedded) that collects the data that intelligent systems depend on to drive the organization forward.

  • Data Repository: Is used to store data accumulated within the organization, including data collected from devices, and data augmented with external data that pertains to the particular business.

  • Business Insights and Analytics: Data in the data repository is further represented on tables, charts and data visualization element to give better insights to the business activities.

  • User Experience: Whether in real time, working from historical data, or a combination, the analytics processes feed data to user experiences such as business reports, dashboards, or web sites. These displays are consumed by users and influence their business decisions.

The Scenario
A typical scenario of Intelligent System in a fictitious grocery store (Reliance Grocery Store) is illustrated below:

The Intelligent System in Reliance Grocery Store runs its operations from the Cloud using Windows Azure. The system comprises of intelligent devices and software for physical store maintenance, monitoring of food storage conditions, safety conditions, etc.

  • The software hosted in the cloud sends inputs to RFID sensors in a grocery store.

  • Workers with handheld Windows Embedded Devices are alerted that tasks are due. The handheld device receives inputs from RFID readers throughout the day.

  • The task list is downloaded to the device from the Cloud. As tasks are completed, they get marked on the device and sent to the Cloud where the data is stored for analysis, reports and statistics.

  • If there is a problem with a task or condition in the store, i.e. a critical temperature threshold has been reached in a freezer or a task is overdue, then an alert is sent, in-real-time, to a store manager who can take action immediately.

  • The data reads the task inputs from the store and is analyzed in the Cloud and compared to industry regulations and other specific goals, KPIs or standards a store may have. Compiled statistics and reports are sent back to the store owners, managers, or regulators so they can stay informed at all times.

The Benefits

  • Ability to connect devices with applications on premises or in the cloud
  • Ability to act on warnings and approaching threshold limits that might impact the business negatively
  • Improves the flow of data from devices to advance operational processes,
  • Collect machine-generated data and integrate it with existing systems to streamline decision making
  • Centralized software updates, management and monitoring of all devices and
  • Seamless access to additional services and upgrades via a connected system.

The Industry Leader

Microsoft products have gained recognition from Gartner as an industry leader in several key areas critical to Intelligent Systems. This prestigious designation has been awarded in the following areas:

  • Server Virtualization Infrastructure: Windows Server with Hyper-V
  • Enterprise Relational Planning: Microsoft Dynamics AX
  • Customer Management: Microsoft Dynamics CRM
  • Enterprise Search: Bing
  • Data Warehouse Database Management Systems: SQL Server
  • Business Intelligence and Analytics Platform: SQL Server Business Intelligence
  • Horizontal Portals: SharePoint
  • Client Management Tools: System Center Configuration Manager

These important areas directly tie in with key attributes of Intelligent Systems: Connectivity, Manageability, Business Analytics and (rich collaborative) User Experience or they are necessary foundational elements of a customer environment such as Data Storage, Server Virtualization, Customer Relations Management and Enterprise Resource Planning.

The Forecast
Intelligent systems are now considered essential for growth in today’s enterprise. In September 2013, IDC reported that they’re expecting in the coming year 2017, there will be 320 million PCs shipped, 407 million tablets, 1.7 billion smartphones and 2.3 billion intelligent systems. With these market opportunities, devices are evolving and there is a growing preference for intelligent devices with embedded software in Intelligent Systems. There are identified growth patterns for certain embedded device types which have been broken down across market specific opportunities. Acting now is the key to staying abreast with modern trends and staying ahead of your competition
